Citizen Scientist

First I came across a great blog over at Scientific American entitled “Budding Scientist”. Then I found several articles about a wonderful group looking for volunteers to help with their project entitled the “Whale Song Project” and when all was said and done I started thinking about a project that’s been sitting on my dining room table that’s been sitting there for quite some time with a group called the “Mastodon Matrix Project“. So anyway, that’s how I came to this post, Citizen Scientist.

My kids have done Butterfly Counts and of course there’s our annual event of Amphibian Night with the Missouri Conservation Department. Hopefully we’ll finish the aforementioned one sitting on the kitchen table during the holidays.

P.S. I have a list somewhere of like twenty projects that I found online that I’ll try and track down. Never mind, I found it, it’s here. The website is called The Daily Green. I also found a website where you can search for projects and it’s called SciStarter. It does take however, a little digging to get information such as a website, on the individual projects

Just yesterday I was going through some older articles for my Green Librarian blog when I came upon an article entitled “For Kids: New Eyes to Scan the Sky” by Stephen Ornes at Science News for Kids.

This the day before there was news of a a new earth-like planet. For more on that hop back on over to Science News again but this time for the article “Distant world looks ripe for life” by Nadia Drake.

Owl Prowl

Now while I don’t know if other states do this but in Missouri our Department of Conservation publishes the Conservation Connections, a monthly newsletter on activities at several places in the St. Louis area including the Busch Conservation Area, Busch and Henges Shooting Ranges, Columbia Bottom Conservation Area, Forest Park, Powder Valley Nature Center and Rockwoods Reservation.

In fact, my daughter just asked me the other day about an event that we’ve gone to the last few years called Amphibian Night. Unfortunately it’s not until April but there is another event we’ve gone to in the past called the Owl Prowl and that’s in just a couple of weeks.

Last year’s Amphibian Night was just a blast as all three of my kids were just running around and having fun! Plus, it’s a great memory for me. Now I don’t know if other conservation departments put out a newsletter like this but I’ll look into it and keep you posted

Coming to a Science Fair near you

With our local Science Fair coming up, I found this book review on “Catch the Wind, Harness the Sun: 22 Super-Charged Projects for Kids” over at Science News. Which reminds me, I have to go as I need to see if my library has it.
